My visit was a pilgrimage to my family origins.
My visit was a pilgrimage to my family origins. It has been so long the only familiar people could be found from the old churchyard. Since its peak, Savitaipale has lost two thirds of its original population size, which can be seen by a number of decaying buildings especially in the more remote villages. Still, I was happy to find a lively and self-confident community with lots of small businesses and extremely friendly people. The church is really handsome and lake Kuolimo is beautiful. The museum at Hakamäki was also very nice, although we almost didn't go as it was difficult to find out if it was open or not.
